Housing and Micro-Financing by HFHI-Nepal

Habitat for HumanityI nternational-Nepal's vision is to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We introduce housing as another product to micro finance, with the mission of "creating a successful housing micro-finance product model that enables HFH programs and housing development partners to deliver sustainable community-based home imporvement programs with the poor."

HFHI-Nepal partners with other micro finance institutions/village/banks/cooperatives to assist their members by providing training on cost effective construction, technology, advice and different construction designs to suit their different shelter needs.

Often Habitat provides funding to initiate a pilot program and then uses the same funds as a revolving fund to match the savings of the members in order to assist more families.

Research shows that 13% of the loan proceeds are used to improve living conditions when housing loans are not provided by such micro financing institutions. Therefore, from a micro finance product perspective, housing micro finance encompasses financial services that allow poor and low-income clients to finance their shelter needs with methods adopted from the micro finance revolution.

Our aim, through housing micro finance, is to make the economically active poor, finance their housing needs incrementally, affordably, and without making themselves trapped into debt burden.

Our attempt is to create options that can be financed in a way that is economically viable, affordable and consistent with tested methods of delivering micro finance services to the poor for their shelter needs.
